FAQ: Hand Painted Silk
1. What makes hand painted silks so special?
Hand painted silks are very unique items, whether they be scarves, wraps, ties or clothing. Hand painted silks are not found in most department stores and are mostly sold at high end boutiques. Hand painted silks are made one at a time, so they are truly one of a kind, unlike mass-produced accessories.
Silk Scarves are perfect for traveling! You can take a few pieces of black clothing and a lot of different scarves- Voila! Also, silk is warm in winter, cool in summer. It is sturdy yet delicate, resilient, lustrous, alive.
Hand-painted silk accessories always make a really sophisticated gift for all ages. Any occasion is ideal for such a gift –from birthdays to Mother’s/Father’s Day, graduation events, various secular or religious holidays – any moment can be brightened up by a beautiful hand-painted silk accessory as a gift for a special person of any age in your life.
2. What type of dyes are used in your items?
I only use the best quality silk dyes and silk paints imported from Europe. All of my silk items are set using a special process called steam-setting. Each item is steam set for 4 hours, which allows the dye to form a permanent bond with the silk. After the steam setting process is completed, the silk is colorfast and washable.
3. What kind of silk fabric are items made of?
I use 100% natural silk only, including Habotai, Satin, Chiffon and Crepe de Chine.
Habotai silk – a very light and has a subtle sheen. Habotai is known as “China silk” and it is the classic silk fabric for painting onto. The Habotai silk scarves feel wonderful to wear.
Crepe de Chine silk has a slightly crinkled texture with a gentle, graceful drape, a very soft hand, and a more substantial weight than the Habotai silk. It is lustrous and beautiful to wear.
Satin has glossy, smooth surface, stays heavier but bears the colors gracefully and makes a unique accessory for a more formal outfit.
Chiffon sheer, loosely woven, transparent, very light and soft, with a beautiful drape and a stretchy crepe-like texture. Chiffon scarves look magnificent and feather-light to wear.
In case you have any specific preference for materials, please send me a note, and we can discuss and arrange that prior to your order.
4. How do I know that you used 100% silk?
When I purchase white silk, it comes with “100% silk” label. I usually remove these labels as they tend to look unattractive on a scarf. If you want, I can sew the label back on before shipping the scarf to you. Rest assured that the scarf you receive is 100% silk. The dyes that I use are specifically made to penetrate natural silk fibers only. They do not work on any man-made fibers.
5. Can you make a scarf that is identical to another scarf on your web site?
No. I hand paint each and every scarf. I can paint a scarf with a similar pattern/color combination to a scarf that I already made, but I will never completely duplicate my artwork.
6. How do I take care of my scarf? Can I wash it?
- Hand wash in cool to cold water with mild liquid soap. Do not leave soaking for more than a few minutes. Do not bleach. The colors may bleed slightly the first few times that the silk is washed.
- Add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the final rins to enhance brilliance of the colors.
- Roll the wet silk in a towel and squeeze gently, but don’t wring.
- Iron your silk garment, while it is damp. Keep the iron in the Delicate or Silk scale. Always iron it on the reversed side. Do not steam!
- While ironing do not wet your silk locally as it may cause rings.
- Do not hang your silk for display in direct sunlight. Indirect light is fine.
- Always use hairspray or perfume before putting on silk garment.
- STORAGE: Best place to store silk is in a dark cool closet, either on a padded hanger or laying flat. Silk is a natural fiber so it has to “breathe”. Please do not store in closed plastic bags or plastic containers and avoid direct exposure to sunlight.
- Travel tips: You can pack your silk items as you would do with any other clothing. After unpacking simply hang. Minor wrinkles should disappear overnight. Too many wrinkles? Hang in a moist place (bathroom after a shower) and the wrinkles should drop out.
I paint some scarfs using special gold/silver/bronze outlines. These scarfs have very unique appearance due to the brilliant outlines.
However, you will notice that the outlines appear slightly raised on the surface of the silk. Please take extra care not to rub the outlines hard when washing the garment. Iron only on reverse side on silk setting (no steam).
FAQ: Polymer Clay & Bead Goods
1. What is polymer clay?
Polymer clay is made from tiny particles of PVC plastic mixed with a pigment and a liquid plasticizer. When cured in a home oven at approximately 275°F (135°C), polymer clay becomes hard and durable. It can be scratched or broken, but if treated with moderate care, cured polymer clay can last for years without deterioration.
2. Is polymer clay non-toxic?
Yes, polymer clay is certified as a non-toxic product.
However, don’t eat it and don’t give it to children who are too young to be trusted not to eat it. (Even if it is certified non-toxic!) It is also recommended that you do not use cured polymer clay as an eating utensil, food bowl, etc. Because cured polymer clay is porous, it would be impossible to clean it sufficiently to prevent bacteria from growing in/on it.
3. How do I take care of polymer clay & bead goods?
When treated with care and love, polymer clay and glass bead jewelry can last for years.
- Protect them from scratching, extrime temperatures, intense sunlight, water and chemicals.
- Please remove them before swimming, workouts, doing household chores, or using abrasive cleaners.
- Apply products such as perfumes or hairspray before wearing your jewelry as certain chemicals in these products may damage it.
- Clean with a soft dry or damp cloth. Keep metal parts away from moisture.
- You can restore shine on your item by buffing it with a lint-free cloth.
- Dry completely before wearing or storing.
- Store in a box or a soft fabric pouch.
- Store lariats untied, hanging on a hanger in your closet to avoid deformations.
CAUTION: Polymer clay and bead items are not meant for small children or pets. They are not a toy. Intended for adult fashion and decorative uses only. Do not put items into mouth or ingest.
